A night away at the Southern Moreton Bay Islands

By Guest Bloggers - Brisbane Girls Abroad

Recently we have been loving exploring Redlands Coast and discovering the hidden gems the region has to offer. Our last adventure took us to two of the southern islands on Redlands Coast: Karragarra and Macleay.

The southern islands are a short trip by either passenger or vehicle ferry from the Redland Bay Marina, about an hour out of Brisbane. We recommend taking a car over to make getting around Macleay much easier.

We stayed the night at Curious Cottages on Macleay Island. The cottages offer two accommodation options: The Licorice Cottage, which is booked out well in advance most weekends of the year, and the Peppermint Cottage, which is where we stayed. Peppermint Cottage is gorgeous, filled with cute and quirky details. With its cosy fireplace and views that look out over the woods to the water, the cottage made the perfect place to relax and enjoy a cheeseboard and wine.

The next morning, we took the inter-island ferry (which is free) to Karragarra Island. There we checked out the super cute community garden and soaked up some sun on one of the islands white sand beaches. On Karragarra we could feel the time slow to island time and it was as though we had entered a little bubble of peaceful solitude.

In the afternoon we took the ferry back to Macleay and picnicked by the water before heading to the bowls club for a game of barefoot bowls. The bowls club is right on the water and is the place to be for sunset.

The southern islands have been one of our favourite discoveries around Brisbane recently, they are the perfect serene escape from the city.
