Welcome Back Whales

Whale season returns to Redlands Coast

Redlands Coast is once again welcoming some very special visitors... majestic humpback whales on their annual migration. From June to November, up to 40,000 whales will travel along Australia’s east coast, passing by North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). The island offers some of the best vantage points to witness this awe-inspiring spectacle. Whether it’s a solo breach or a pod gliding gracefully through the water, there’s something truly magical about spotting whales from this stunning coastal paradise.

Where to spot them

As one of Australia’s most easterly points, North Stradbroke Island offers some of the best land-based whale watching opportunities in the country. No need for a tour boat – just pack your binoculars and head for the cliffs. Point Lookout is a favourite among locals and visitors alike, with its expansive ocean views and elevated platforms perfect for spotting whales cruising by. The Gorge Walk at Point Lookout is particularly spectacular, winding along the coastline with plenty of spots where you can pause and take in the action. With a bit of luck, you’ll see a whale breach right off the headland!

Where to stay

From beachside apartments and holiday homes to cosy cabins and eco retreats, North Stradbroke Island has accommodation to suit every style of travel. Check out the deals available during the season here. It’s worth booking early, the island is a popular spot during whale season!

Getting there is easy

Getting to North Stradbroke Island is part of the fun. Passenger ferries and vehicle barges depart regularly from Cleveland, making the island an easy and scenic trip from the mainland. You don’t need a 4WD to explore, standard vehicles are welcome, with sealed roads across the island. If you're heading over on the passenger ferry, take advantage of the local bus service, which stops at some of the island’s best spots.

The whales have made the journey – now it’s your turn!

Swap your screen time for sea time and head over to North Stradbroke Island for your front row seats to the humpback highway. Whale season waits for no one… so what are you waiting for?
