Spend a day on Coochiemudlo Island (Goochie Mudlo)

Coochiemudlo Island (Goochie Mudlo), known as "Coochie" to locals, is quietly nestled in Moreton Bay off the coast of Victoria Point (Warrer Warrer) and is part of our naturally wonderful Redlands Coast. This tiny, sub-tropical island spans only five square kilometres, making it the ideal destination for a day trip or a relaxing holiday. Surrounded by a heritage-listed emerald fringe, the island may seem uninhabited from a distance, yet 850 people call this beautiful island home.

Hop on-board the Amity Trader passenger ferry from Victoria Point, and you’ll find yourself on island time in eight short minutes. With the exciting roll-out of the 50-cent fares across Queensland, there has never been a better time to visit. Although this hidden gem is practically on Brisbane’s doorstep, stepping onto the island instantly transports you to a completely different world.

Once you set foot on the island, you will be greeted by the pristine Main Beach, where visitors and locals alike enjoy soaking up the sun, swimming, and relaxing. The shallow waters are patrolled by the local Surf Life Saving Club on weekends from September through the April school holidays. Dog lovers will be pleased to know that Main Beach becomes a dog off-leash area during certain months. Check out the Redland City Council website for the latest info on dog regulations.

To the right of the jetty lies Pioneer Park, a charming coastal playground equipped with nature-themed elements, climbing frames, slides, and a tower, perfect for little pirates. Pack a picnic and enjoy the shaded tables, electric barbecues, and toilet facilities while soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

For those looking to avoid the hassle of lugging around eskies and food, you’re in luck! A variety of food and drink options are available at the local eatery, just a two-minute walk east of the jetty.

Coochie is also home to a thriving community of artists. Explore galleries and immerse yourself in the island’s vibrant creative scene. Visit the Artisan Collective website for gallery locations and trading hours.

The island circuit is a scenic five-kilometre loop that takes about an hour to complete on foot. East of the jetty, follow the pathways to discover the RAMSAR-protected Melaleuca Wetlands, rich in birdlife, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along Norfolk Beach, which offers stunning views of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).

Every July, Norfolk Beach hosts a captivating reenactment Mathew Flinders’ landing in 1799. This popular event invites visitors to stroll through beachside markets and immerse themselves in a significant moment of history.

As you continue your seaside stroll along Norfolk Beach, you’ll find Morwong Beach, a serene north-facing stretch towards Peel Island (Teerk Roo Ra). It’s perfect for a quiet beach walk, swim or a spot of fishing. Follow the signage to the Coochiemudlo Island Circuit, taking in views of tranquil waters and the lush emerald fringe. Stumble across The Isle of Coochie Golf Club, tucked away amongst beautiful bushland on the western side. Whether you’re a casual golfer or interested in their monthly special events featuring food trucks, live music, and raffles, there is something for everyone. Check out their website for more information, Coochie Golf.

Complete your circuit with panoramic views from the viewing platform next to the Coochiemudlo Island Community Hall. If you’re tempted to stay longer and soak in all that Coochie has to offer, the island boasts a variety of accommodation options, including holiday homes, cottages and apartments. More info, Here
